Self-Advocacy: What is Cross Roads?
In everyone's life, there comes a time when gaining access to something that is desired or needed is difficult for various reasons. Imagine what it is like to have a disability where the world is much more difficult to access.
- Cross Roads is a group of individuals with disabilities who gather together on a regular basis to tackle issues such as violation of rights and access to needed services. The group also offers support to its members who are striving to achieve the greatest level of independence possible.
- Cross Roads mission is to help those with disabilities overcome barriers to live as independently as possible.
- Cross Roads vision is for everyone, with or without disabilities, to cross paths and help each other.
Who supports this group?
The group is self-supporting with its own officers. Cross Roads also appreciates the backing it receives form the Cerebral Palsy Association of the North Country (CP).
What we do locally?
On the local level, Cross Roads will advocate for anyone who faces physical, political, discriminatory, or other obstacles to accessing their community.
The broader picture
Cross Roads keeps track of proposed legislation that may affect individuals with disabilities. They write letters to their congressmen or senators either supporting or opposing those legislative propositions.
Other Activities
The group keeps informed of self-advocacy measures on the local, state, and national levels by communicating with members of other self-advocacy groups and attending conferences.
The group also takes time to get to know each other better through social events. They have fundraisers and attend other community events. The group meets on the first Thursday of every month at 12:30 PM at 4 Commerce Lane, Canton.
